There can be no graduation as usual during genocide.
While Gaza faces continued bombing and starvation at the hands of Israel, with the full support of the US, Columbia profits from this destruction and funnels the money back into their largest investment of the year – commencement.
Meanwhile, there are no graduations in Gaza this year.
Columbia University remains complicit through providing investment, research, and ideological cover to genocide while repressing those who stand on the right side of history. For over a year, Columbia University has tried to repress the of thousands of students, workers, and community members who have fought tirelessly for divestment from Israeli occupation. Despite overwhelming support of divestment, evidenced by referendums passed in 2018 and 2020, and last year’s historic votes for divestment at seven Columbia schools, university administration continues to fund genocide, protect imperial interests, and suppress any form of protest. Columbia has collaborated with ICE and DHS to detain our peers. Columbia has issued over 200 suspensions and 9 expulsions to those who speak out against their university funding the bombing, maiming, torture, and starvation of Palestinians.
The university has shown they cannot be swayed by democratic vote or moral appeals. They give us no choice but to escalate. We will continue to disrupt the imperialist system that thrives on bloodshed and exploitation. While the university has money and technology, we have the power of popular support. We in our hundreds, thousands, and millions internationally can take power back. We can disrupt and bring these rotten institutions to their graves.
There will be no commencement as usual while this university continues its investment in the destruction of Gaza and the displacement of our people in Harlem.
We have a duty to rise. We have a duty to disrupt. We have a duty to be brave.
We will always return for Palestine.
