WHEN TWO STUDENTS ARE EXPELLED, HUNDREDS MORE RISE UP! WE KEEP US SAFE!
STUDENTS STAGE EMERGENCY SIT-IN AT MILBANK HALL OUTSIDE THE DEAN’S OFFICE, DEMAND BARNARD'S ADMIN REVERSE THE EXPULSIONS!!
cover your face + wear a mask, don't swipe in, dress comfortably, bring noisemakers, bring a friend!
Last weekend, Barnard expelled two students for their alleged involvement in disrupting a class on a sanitized history of israel taught by a former IOF soldier, Avraham Shilon, who Columbia pays to present to students a genocide-free, displacement-free tale of the zionist state.
80 years ago, Columbia expelled Robert Burke for leading pickets protesting Columbia's ties with the Nazis. The university's then president, Nicholas Murray Butler, was a nefarious anti-semite who limited the number of Jewish people who could attend Columbia in 1919, and in 1933 invited the Nazi ambassador to Columbia with open arms after Hitler was named Chancellor of Germany. Columbia and Barnard admins have been using distorted definitions equating anti-zionism and anti-semitism to suspend and expel our classmates, proclaiming "anti-semitism has no place on our campus," while continuing to uphold the central library's name that honors a Nazi-sympathizer and refusing to apologize to the anti-Nazi Burke for his expulsion to this day.
Barnard's mission is to educate students to "lead and serve their society." How has Barnard exemplified leading and serving our society? By funding and profiting from the genocide of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian people, by evicting Harlem residents to expand Columbia-Barnard's real estate monopoly, and by expelling, evicting, arresting, and suspending students who protest the university's ties to genocide.
Barnard and Columbia admins have shown time and time again that their interests are not to lead or serve students or society. To them, "leading and serving society" means protecting the university's material interests which are predicated on oppression and genocide - this means investing in genocide and expelling students who disrupt the university's investment in genocide. It is us as students, professors, faculty, and workers in our thousands who will continue to keep us safe, as we have throughout our history of fighting this genocidal institution.
Barnard's administrators, like Vice President and Dean Leslie Grinage, expel and evict students from the comfort of their Milbank offices.
Dean Grinage is the sole person deciding whether or not the students will remain expelled, demand she accept their appeals.
The repression cannot stand! We will not rest until full amnesty! Until Palestine is free!
JOIN THE SIT-IN AND DEMAND:
1. An immediate reversal of the expulsions against the two Barnard Students.
2. Amnesty for all students disciplined for Pro-Palestine activism. Drop all the charges now!
3. A public meeting with Dean Leslie Grinage and President Laura Rosenbury.
4. Abolition of the Barnard disciplinary system including complete transparency on current, past, and future disciplinary proceedings.
Disruption until divestment! Resistance until return! Agitation until amnesty!
CAN'T MAKE IT? CALL OUT SICK, FLOOD THE LINES, SIGN THE PETITION
